The power of community at work
How Business Resource Groups are driving change for associates.
At Capital One Canada, our mission to “change banking for good” is built on doing the right thing through openness, integrity, and respect. Whether it’s through the products we offer or the initiatives we take on as a community, we’re committed to driving change for our customers and our associates alike. That’s why we have multiple associate-led Business Resource Groups (BRGs) that help our associates be part of the change.
The importance of belonging and inclusion in the workplace
We all want to feel seen and heard at work, and being part of a community united by shared experiences and building deeper connections can make that sense of belonging even more meaningful.
Our BRGs, which are open to all, provide a forum for our associates to come together through shared values, cultural celebrations, and powerful networking and skill development opportunities. Each BRG offers a unique focus and community experience, so let’s take a closer look at some of the groups our associates are so passionate about.
1 in 5
There’s real strength that comes from finding a supportive group that can relate to common experiences. 1 in 5 is built to champion a culture of positive mental health for all associates, with focused support for the “one in five” impacted by these challenges.
This BRG aims to reduce stigma through genuine conversations, awareness initiatives and community events, all while partnering with HR and senior leadership to help promote the best practices for a healthy workplace.
CapAbilities
Quality accessibility is at the heart of a thriving environment. CapAbilities is all about fostering a culture of accessibility, belonging, and inclusion for people with visible and invisible disabilities. Their focus is on creating an effortlessly accessible workplace culture and a safe environment that enables people with all abilities to reach their full potential.
Empowher Canada
Providing a platform that brings women together can help foster both professional and personal connections. Empowher is dedicated to creating a space where women’s success and achievements are shared and celebrated.
To achieve this mission, this group focuses on three key pillars: cultivation, culture and community. They strive to find ways to support women in our communities.
¡HOLA!
¡HOLA! is dedicated to creating a space where Hispanic culture and achievements are shared and celebrated. The group’s vision is to empower Hispanic associates to thrive at Capital One by communicating the benefits of the community’s network, cultivating Hispanic leaders, and sharing cultural activities among professionals.
Indigenous Spirit
Hands-on action can make a lasting impact. Indigenous Spirit is dedicated to creating a space where Indigenous culture and achievements are shared and celebrated by providing opportunities for cultural education and celebration, as well enhancing inclusivity.
Outside the workplace, this group has supported children and youth in the Toronto area at camps that teach life skills and heritage awareness. There’s also a focus on rural communities – learning more about their successes and challenges within the financial landscape.
Origins
A cultural mosaic for all, Origins is dedicated to creating a space where Asian and Pacific Islander culture and achievements are shared and celebrated. The diversity in associate backgrounds is proudly highlighted in the numerous cultural celebrations organized throughout the year, including events that showcase the culinary delights and rich traditions from across Asia.
Out Front
There’s empowerment that comes from openness and acceptance. Out Front is an 2SLGBTQ+ focused BRG that represents the community through educational events like hosting keynote speakers and championing Days of Visibility, among many other highlights.
This group fosters an inclusive environment for our associates, celebrating and supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in the workplace.
Parents@Work
Parents need a safe space for discussion, mutual support and shared experiences. Parents@Work is dedicated to creating a space where all families, caregivers, and parents can find community and be celebrated. Through engaging discussion panels, as well as tips and tricks for working parents, this group’s goal is to enable connections through thought-provoking events, meaningful conversations, and a network of mentors who are parents, too.
Voices
There are many ways to build an influential platform. Voices is dedicated to creating a space where Black culture and achievements are shared and celebrated.
Some examples of this BRG’s impact include in-office workshop courses on financial literacy, and Black History Month celebrations.
Our BRGs have become a staple in our organization, and each one is a reflection of our talented people and the impact they make every day. If you want to drive change at Capital One, check out our open roles.
