Making an impact from day one
How Capital One empowers interns to succeed.
At Capital One, our goal is to provide a supportive foundation where interns can learn and develop their skills, build confidence, and have the chance to make a real impact on real customers.
So how is this done? Our four-month paid internships are designed to give students a high level of ownership that’s balanced with training, support and mentorship across different areas of the Capital One business. But don’t take our word for it, find out what the experience is really like from some of our very own interns!
An internship that balances support with autonomy
A mix of independence and access to supportive resources helped William propel his Capital One Canada internship into a full-time role as a software engineer.
“The most valuable part of my internship was learning how to be more independent,” says William. “I was given the freedom to drive the project’s development and work on areas that interested me. This autonomy forced me to become more self-reliant, as I needed to take on full ownership of tasks, unblock myself when problem-solving, and navigate internal systems on my own.”
On the flip side, William found the structure he needed by using the available training resources and tapping into his peers' experience. “Capital One puts a strong emphasis on learning and this has greatly benefited me. Capital One requires and pays for all software engineers to become AWS Cloud Practitioner Certified, which gave me a solid foundation in cloud computing,” William reflects.
Learning by doing
Getting hands-on exposure to the Capital One business through everyday projects is part of what can make an internship so impactful. For Mariya, a current software engineering intern and student, working on real-world projects proved invaluable. “Throughout my internship, I had several opportunities to build and release features for the client onboarding flow, and observe the performance and positive impact of my work in real time.”
Mariya is already thinking about how her experience can translate long-term. “This internship has helped me a lot when it comes to thinking about my future career. The work that I was doing throughout my internship was very similar, if not identical, to the work that my teammates were doing on a daily basis,” says Mariya. “I got to experience what it’s like to be a software engineer at a big tech company, which helped me solidify my understanding of what I’m looking for in my future career.”
Training for the future
Getting the right training and support to build your skills can really help shape your experience and launch your future career. Like Marwan, who is now a full-time strategy analyst after completing a four-month summer internship. He found value in how his role simulated a full-time job with proper training. “I really like the way Capital One structures the internship. Interns get to focus on one main project throughout the term to really experience the role of a full-time employee,” says Marwan.
“In both my onboardings for the internship and my full-time role, we got a solid three-week training that helped build our technical skills and soft skills, but also gave us exposure to the different teams at the company,” Marwan emphasizes. “The effort put in this training is a testament to Capital One’s willingness to help us young professionals grow, and is reflected in the support that we get even after our training within our teams.”
Innovating for good
With all the hands-on experience and training in hand, what’s equally meaningful is the impact you can make on the financial well-being of Canadians.
For Margaret, a former intern, now full time strategy analyst, her contributions are a source of pride. “On the professional side, my first exposure to handling real, large-sized datasets was eye-opening. This was daunting at first, because I was suddenly accessing real people’s personal financial information. But eventually, this taught me about the gravity of the financial industry and the non-negotiable importance of data sensitivity,” says Margaret. “We aren't just running models; we’re making a real, daily impact on real people’s lives.”
“The project was centered on investigating recent risk upticks in various customer segments, which involved a deep dive into the root causes, implications, and potential solutions. What made me proud was that while this initially felt like a shot in the dark, my manager and team provided incredible structure and support, ensuring I had a path to success. The ownership I felt allowed me to take the project from creation to solution, ultimately having a real impact on Canadians applying for credit,” says Margaret.
