Developing the next generation of software engineers

How Capital One Canada is providing opportunities to grow in the tech world.

Technology is in a state of constant evolution, making it more important than ever to stay ahead of trends and advancements. At Capital One Canada, we recognize just how fast the tech market is changing, and how our mission of “changing banking for good” requires a heavy investment in our tech. This means hiring top talent and ensuring we’re providing the right resources to help our tech associates thrive.

It starts with you

At Capital One, we’re invested in hiring the right people for our roles. It’s not only about who can get the job done, but also who aligns with our broader mission – and our software engineers play a big role in driving that mission.

“We build reliable, secure and user-friendly digital solutions that empower our customers to manage their credit confidently,” says Maria, a Director of Software Engineering. “Our goals are always centered around helping our customers reach a better place for long-term financial success.” We know that’s no small feat, but with the right team of people, anything is possible. That’s why we’re regularly investing in new talent who align with our mission, have the drive that the tech industry demands, and are ready to take their career to the next level.

Development 101

If you’re a new graduate joining our team, we want to set you up for success. That’s why we offer a 12-month Tech Development Program tailored for our newest software engineers. Through this program, you’ll participate in a collaborative experience where you’ll get exposure to foundational training, networking opportunities and mentorship throughout the year – all in an effort to start your career at Capital One on the right track. Whether it’s diving into a business case study, having a coffee chat with a senior leader, or learning from subject matter experts across the company, our new associates will be able to find a path that best suits them, and experience what tech life is like at Capital One.

Grow, and then grow some more

As our tech associates become more seasoned in their roles, innovation becomes daily practice, skills develop, and ambitions grow. In a field that’s constantly evolving, we believe that development never truly ends. “What sets Capital One apart is the need to be bold and agile. We’re continuously learning and growing, and we’re not scared to fail,” says Lackesiha, a Software Engineering Manager. When our associates express interest in upskilling to drive our mission, we want to be there to support them. So what’s next?

We’ve invested in a unique in-house learning experience via Tech College, a hub of engineering courses, designed for both new and existing associates who want to continue learning and growing in their careers. With multiple programs to choose from (including cloud computing, data engineering, generative AI, cybersecurity, etc.), associates can pick from thousands of instructor-led or self-paced courses to further develop or learn new tech skills. Our associates are encouraged to pursue certifications like the various Amazon Web Services (AWS) certifications.

Beyond Tech College, we've gone all in on AI. We're actively encouraging our associates to leverage the latest AI-powered development tools and agentic assistants to enhance all aspects of their work. We've built different courses and a community of practice to ensure associates at every experience level can keep up with the fast pace of AI innovation.

By providing learning opportunities at every stage, we’re not only showing our commitment to our tech associates’ careers, but also to continued innovation in an effort to “change banking for good.” As we invest in expanding our tech teams, we’re looking for more curious forward-thinkers who want to push their skills, talent and career to the next level. Think you’re up for the challenge? Check out our open roles to see how you can make your mark at Capital One Canada.
