About the Team

The Capital One Canada Risk Office is responsible for managing and executing risk management activities, such as: risk assessment programs, risk event governance, controls governance, and controls testing. The Risk Office Controls Advisory team is responsible for governing and maintaining oversight over Capital One Canada’s control suite to support the health and effectiveness of key risk mitigation activities.

About the Role

You will have the opportunity to apply your risk management expertise as you oversee all controls in Capital One Canada. You will serve as a subject matter expert and change agent as you partner with teams across the business to consult on the design and operation of new and existing controls to drive risk mitigation and compliance with all Enterprise Risk Management standards. You will also collaborate with stakeholders in the second line of defense to remain up-to-date with evolving Enterprise guidance, program updates, and key decisions. Through on-going monitoring of the control suite and collaboration with stakeholders, you will develop deep strategic insights that will drive strategies to improve the health and effectiveness of all controls. You will also support reporting on all relevant metrics. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated risk professional and a relationship builder with excellent problem solving and communication skills.

The right candidate will have:

  • A solid understanding of risk management and governance principles and familiarity with the processes and controls that govern these activities (i.e., three lines of defense model and risk framework principles)

  • The ability to distill complex information into a clear and concise narrative

  • The ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects and deliverables

  • Solid analytical and investigative skills

  • A proven track record of driving high quality and timely results

  • The ability to work autonomously in a dynamically changing environment

  • Demonstrated business maturity with the ability to effectively communicate and influence stakeholders within all levels of the organization, establish and maintain positive relationships

  • Solid interpersonal and conflict resolution skills

  • Strong judgment and knowledge of when to escalate with appropriate stakeholders before issues arise

Your Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure that Capital One Canada’s control suite remains in adherence with all Enterprise Risk requirements

  • Maintain oversight over the health and effectiveness of the Canada Control Suite

  • Build and maintain reporting of controls performance

  • Leverage data to develop strategic insights into the effectiveness and suitability of controls across the Canada business in the context of evolving regulatory requirements, new business initiatives, and internal operations

  • Support teams across the business by providing guidance and training on control design for new and existing controls

  • Partner with teams to help address gaps in the design and operation of controls

  • Build and maintain relationships with Risk Offices in other Capital One divisions to learn how other teams are approaching problems

  • Actively participate in the Capital One Risk, Legal, and Compliance communities to build relationships and proactively identify emerging trends and issues 

  • Collaborate effectively with stakeholders across the lines of defense 

  • Maintain knowledge of Enterprise Standards


Basic Qualifications:

  • Completed a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field

  • At least 4 years of experience in a Risk Management role, such as: Enterprise Risk Management, Risk Management in the first, second, or third lines of defense, compliance, risk identification, risk assessment, risk reporting, etc.

  • At least 4 years of experience in the financial services industry 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with credit cards operations

  • Certified in or knowledge of COSO ERM framework

  • Scripting experience in SQL and the ability to understand test scripts for automated controls

  • Experience working with Automated/Hybrid controls

  • Experience in Controls Testing

  • Experience with Lean & Six Sigma tools & methodology
